About the ERS Research Gateway

ERS Spectrum Author Guidelines

Educational Research Service welcomes manuscript submissions for ERS Spectrum from all sources. Manuscripts from practicing school administrators dealing with research and educational programs in their local school districts are especially appropriate for publication. Spectrum publishes original research and information of interest to school district decision makers. Spectrum articles cover a broad range of topics, including student issues, social and behavioral issues, public school management, instructional programs, school policy, administrative methods, finance, personnel relations, and related areas.

Manuscripts submitted for publication should be based on research data, proven practices, the professional literature, or direct experience.

Manuscript submission specifications are as follows:

  • Manuscripts should be submitted electronically, preferably as a Word file email attachment. Manuscripts may also be submitted in paper format but must be computer-scannable (original with clean, dark type).
  • Articles in ERS Spectrum generally run between 4,500 and 7,500 words, including tables.
  • APA style should be used.
  • Please provide a short abstract at the beginning of the article.
  • Please provide a mailing address and email address for each author, plus a brief statement of each author's degree, professional role or title, and institutional affiliation. The author's title, institutional affiliation, and email address are provided as a footnote in each article.
  • Tables or other illustrative material should be included at the end of the manuscript file, with placement locations (call-outs) provided within the text.
  • If there are any tables or figures that are not done in Word, please send them as separate files.

Manuscripts are peer-reviewed by members of the ERS Editorial Advisory Panel. Authors will be informed of selection decisions upon completion of the peer review, and revisions may be requested at that time. ERS reserves the right to edit all accepted manuscripts for style, format, length and clarity. Manuscripts are accepted for publication with the understanding that they are original writings that have not been published elsewhere.

Manuscripts and inquiries should be addressed to: Cheryl Bratten, Editor, Educational Research Service, 1001 N. Fairfax St., Suite 500, Alexandria, VA 22314-1587. Telephone: 703-248-6227. Fax: 703-243-1985. Email: editor@ers.org.
